2. Style: (5 sentences. What visual characteristics does this artist’s work possess? If you can compare it to a painting or art history style please do.)
His style is very surreal. Most of his photos incorporate multiple images into a single one. This creates a very interesting effect when you look at his photos. His style of work could be compared to that of Salvador Dali. The combinations of images create a feeling of disjointed unity in his photos.
3. Philosophy: (5 sentences. What were the major ideas behind this artist’s work? Where they personal, political, social, etc. What were they trying to “say” with their photographs?)
The ideas behind these were influenced by the changes to our society during the 1960’s and later. He was revolutionizing and creating a new way of thinking about and taking photos. His surreal works with layered images was a stark contrast to the photos of the previous decades. His work helped blaze the trail for today’s surrealist and abstract photographers.
4. Influences: (5 sentences. How has the photographer influenced you in your work?)
I was influenced in my work by the surrealism in his work. Also his use of multiple negatives was echoed in my work, using multiple layers and images in a photo. I found that since I learned of Jerry Uelsmann I have been focusing more on the surreal and abstract qualities of my work. His work has a heavy focus on the abstract and what we cannot understand just with what we know. His works are always abstract but always have a feeling of uniqueness that I have attempted to achieve in my own photos.

6. Compare and Contrast: You will need to compare and contrast your final 3 images with the 3 images you choose by your photographer. Write about each piece (5 sentence.)
My first photo was conflict of interests. The way I layered the image did not match the original image perfectly but I believe it was able to achieve the same feel from the image overall. Wandering the clouds is my favorite of my images because it was the closest to the original image. It gives a feeling of freedom and the ability to just wander. The Mystic Eye was a challenge for me to take, because the background image of the original photo was hard to achieve in Southeast Michigan. I still managed to take the photo, but it didn't come out as well as I would have liked.
7. Personal Artist Statement: Your images should tell a story. In 5 sentences tell me about your image
I chose this photographer because he gave a feeling of the surreal while still remaining firmly in the reality of our world. Also the fact that he was from Detroit made me want to look at his photos. The reason I enjoyed these photos so much was because of the feeling of the insane. The ordered chaos of his images reminded me of my family. This was a highly enjoyable project for me and I believe these images came out beautifully.
